The Smateria Story
Smateria is a women-owned and operated brand founded in 2006 by Jennifer Morellato and Elisa Lion, brought together by a shared passion for creativity, business and sustainability.
Elisa is the creative force behind Smateria, always exploring new ways to transform materials with an unexpected, playful twist. Jennifer’s vision was to build a business that empowers Cambodians through meaningful work.
Together, they took the leap - turning an idea into a brand grounded in creativity, positivity and purpose.
Smateria means to transform a material and give it new life.
Our originality lies in the unconventional materials we use. Inspired by urban and local surroundings, we design bags and accessories using repurposed, upcycled and recycled materials - creating something unexpected, yet beautifully functional.
Every piece is ethically handcrafted in Cambodia with an Italian design sensibility, using durable, high-quality materials made to last.
Produced in-house from start to finish, our bags are brought to life by a skilled community of Khmer artisans, working in a supportive and empowering environment.
