If you've had an email or two from us in the last week, you already know the short version: we're back, and it's spring. Here's the longer one.
We've spent the last little while doing what we do best, which is not very much marketing at all. Bags got made, one net and one strip of recycled plastic at a time, in our own workshop in Cambodia. Orders got packed. Customers kept telling us things we loved hearing (more on that below). And somewhere in among all of that, a collection called IKI ended up sitting quietly in the background, when it should have been front and centre the whole time.
Consider this us fixing that.
What IKI actually is
IKI isn't a new product line, it's a handful of our most distinctive pieces, chosen because they don't play it safe. Bold colour. Unconventional shapes. Materials most brands wouldn't look twice at, turned into something you'd actually want to carry. If the rest of our range is "reliable and well-loved," IKI is the part of Smateria that's a little louder about it.
That's on purpose. We've always believed a bag should say something true about the person carrying it, not just match whatever everyone else already owns. Repurposed materials shouldn't mean muted design, and IKI is where we get to prove that. IKI is quality over quantity, plain and simple: fewer pieces, made properly, not more of the same.
Every piece in the collection is still handcrafted the way everything we make is: by hand, by a skilled team of artisans in our own Cambodian workshop. Fair Trade certified. PETA-approved. Built to be carried for years, not one season.
What it's actually made from
This material took us 15 years to transform and perfect. It starts as industrial packaging, plastic waste collected from garment factories, not virgin plastic and not something bought in ready-made. It's cleaned, checked, and cut, then fused together with recycled jersey (also pulled from factory waste) to create an entirely new fabric of our own. Only once that fabric exists does the actual bag-making begin: panels cut, sewn, and assembled by hand.
Suddenly, it's not waste anymore. We think that's beautiful.
Why we're talking about it now
Honestly? Because it deserves more attention than it's had. These are pieces we're genuinely proud of, made the slow way, and we'd rather they end up with someone who'll actually use and love them than sit quietly waiting for someone to notice. So over the next few weeks, expect to hear more from us about specific pieces in the IKI line, what they're made from, who they suit, and why we think they're some of the best examples of what Smateria is actually about.
A quick word on what's new versus what's back
Spring for us isn't a "whole new collection" moment, it's more like a reintroduction. Some of what you'll see is genuinely new. Some of it is a restock of pieces that sold out and are finally back. Either way, it's all handmade, all one-off in its own small way (because working with repurposed materials means no two batches are ever quite identical), and all here because we think it's worth your attention, not because a calendar told us to post something.
