Celebrating the women behind Smateria

International Women’s Day is a time to recognise the achievements, creativity and resilience of women around the world. At Smateria, it is also an opportunity to celebrate the community of women who bring our products to life every day.
Smateria was founded in 2006 by Jennifer Morellato and Elisa Lion, two women who shared a vision for design with purpose.
They believed that fashion could combine creativity, functionality and meaningful social impact. What began as a small workshop has grown into an independent brand known for transforming unconventional materials into colourful, distinctive bags and accessories.
From the beginning, Smateria has been driven by the belief that business can create opportunity while celebrating creativity.
Today, Smateria products are crafted in our Cambodian workshop by a talented team of artisans.
Many of the women working in the workshop are mothers supporting their families through stable employment and valuable skills. The workshop environment encourages learning, collaboration and personal growth, creating a community where artisans can build confidence and independence.
Every bag is carefully handmade, reflecting the pride and craftsmanship of the people who create it.
When you carry a Smateria bag, you carry a story of creativity and collaboration.
The bold colours and distinctive materials reflect the brand’s design philosophy, while the craftsmanship behind each piece reflects the dedication of the artisans who bring the designs to life.
It is a reminder that thoughtful design and responsible production can go hand in hand.
International Women’s Day is a moment to celebrate the women who inspire us in big and small ways.
From the founders who imagined the brand, to the artisans who craft every bag, to the women in our community who carry them every day, Smateria is shaped by creativity, resilience and purpose.
Today we celebrate them all.
